Building on Bear Blog
FreedomWriter.net is no longer a static website, but is now powered by Bear Blog — a blogging platform that, to my delight, mostly fulfill my requirements, and also greatly align with my own values. Simplicity. Reliability. Longevity. Community.
Bear, it seems to me, is a hybrid of a CMS and a static-site generator. You have this web app taking care of everything for you (like a CMS), but you write your posts in Markdown, in a simple text editor, and you have a lot of freedom to configure your site (like a generator). It’s the best of both worlds. But what is most important to me is Bear’s commitment to “stick around forever,” as explained in its manifesto.
I have great plans for FreedomWriter.net — it’s going to be my life’s work! — and I’m going to invest a lot of myself and a lot of my resources in it. Building it on a solid foundation, therefore, is an absolute necessity, and I’m very optimistic that I’ve found that foundation in Bear.
Goodbye, Blogger, and thank you. You taught me how to blog all those years ago.
Goodbye, WordPress. You showed me what a great blog could be, but you had become too bloated and had stopped caring about me. (Who cares about your block editor?)
And goodbye, Hugo, for now. You are a pain, and you are far from simple and stable. But I’ve learned a lot from you, creating and hosting my own static sites. So thank you. We will see each other again.
